Sadly, we have received a number of reports of dead hedgehogs on the village roads. Please remember to look out for them when driving & if you see one, slow down & if it safe to do so, maybe stop to let them cross. We know that hedgehogs visit several local gardens where they are much loved, so let’s all try to look after them.
The People's Trust for Endangered Species think around 50,000 - 100,000 hedgehogs are killed annually on roads, out of a population of about 600,000, but the figures are very uncertain. If it's about a quarter of the total each year, then road casualties are likely to impact on the population and reducing that number could help conserve hedgehogs.
